loud offers fabulous summers and a winter wonderland of activities of all kinds. A golf course, numerous hiking and biking trails, volcanic caves, world-class fly fishing, the Mt. Shasta Wilderness Area with its glaciers and climbing opportunities, are all available within a short drive from McCloud.
City of Mt. Shasta - In 1854, the first name of the town was Berryvale, after the fields of wild strawberries growing in the area. In 1887, the name was changed to Sisson after J.H. Sisson, the owner of a lodge there and the man who laid out the town when the railroad came through the area. The name was changed to its current name by a vote of the residents in 1922.
The headwaters of the Sacramento River are located in the Mount Shasta City Park. A big spring gushes icy clear water from a lava tube originating deep within Mt. Shasta. Bring empty jugs to fill with the freshest cleanest water anywhere! The water flows into Cold Creek which is the northern most feeder stream of the Sacramento River, traveling from here down through the Golden Gate in San Francisco, a 270+ mile trip.
Castle Lake, Little Castle Lake, and Heart Lake - Castle Lake, Little Castle Lake, and Heart Lake located about 12 miles southwest of Mount Shasta. Castle Lake is an easily accessible clear alpine lake in a granite bowl is surrounded by pine forests located high in the Eddy Mountains west of Mt. Shasta. Little Castle Lake and Heart Lake can be reached by following the trail past Castle Lake on up the moderate grade to a spectacular view of Mt. Shasta.
Lake Siskiyou - Small mountain lake located four miles west of the city of Mt. Shasta. Fed by five pure mountain streams, this 430 acre recreational and sailing lake, with a 10 mph speed limit, offers some of the best bass and trout fishing in Northern California.
Mt. Shasta Fish Hatchery; Sisson Museum - Mount Shasta Fish Hatchery is the oldest operating hatchery in the West. Large open ponds hold Rainbow and Brown trout raised to stock mountain streams, rivers and lakes for fishing. View spawning on selected Tuesdays during fall and winter months.
Sisson Museum is adjacent to the fish hatchery and takes you back in time to the colorful past of the Strawberry Valley. Public restrooms, drinking fountain, picnic tables. Gift store. Free Admission. Open daily 10am-5pm May through September; noon-4pm during winter months. Closed January and February for exhibit changes. Drive 1/2 mile west of Central I-5 exit to Old Stage Rd. Medicine Lake - Located 33 miles off Highway 89 northeast of Bartle, offers camping, boating, and fishing. Medicine Lake is a shield volcano and offers unusual volcanic terrain as well as a beautiful, clear mountain lake for swimming and fishing access.
Glass Mountain - Covering 4,210 acres east of Medicine Lake, this volcanic glass flow has been designated as a Special Interest Area for its unique geological feature - glassy dacite and rhyolitic obsidian flowed from the same vent simultaneously without mixing. Glass Mountain exhibits the results of multi-stage volcanic activity so recent that there has been no modification by weathering, erosion, or vegetative cover. Take care not to handle or walk on the obsidian, as a slip can cause a serious puncture or laceration
Shasta Sunset Dinner Train - On weekend evenings throughout the summer, the McCloud Railway runs an excursion train at 4 p.m. and the Dinner Train at 6 p.m.. The scenery is spectacular and the dining superb!
